Learning new languages

Ok, we're now into our 8th week on the course.  It's a reading week, so time to catch up on everything & try to tick a few things off the to-do list. The weather's been a bit more study-friendly this weekend so that helps.  First off, just in case anyone's reading this that isn't on the course (unlikely I know, but hey...), I suppose I'd better give a quick overview of what the course involves.

There's 3 modules in the first semester:
  • Introduction to Computing & Web Technologies
  • Client Side Web Technologies
  • Server Side Web Technologies
In my own head, I divide these up as follows:
  • learning about computer components (hardware & software), architecture, networks & how they combine to create the interweb.
  • building the part of the web site that people (clients) see when they browse
  • building the back-end of the web site that stores the info, responds to clients actions on the browser, etc.
Obviously, it's way more intricate than that, and as the weeks go by I'm beginning to see more of an overlap between them. With new languages like MySql, Ruby, & HTML being taught in separate modules, it can be easy to get mixed up, like putting divs in a piece of Ruby code or using the wrong types of brackets in CSS or MySql. Similar to the way some of us throw random bits of Irish into our pigeon French when on holidays; "Est-ce q'il y a une garaiste dans la ville? Mon voiture est banjaxed."

  1. Excellent French there, John. And the accent isn't bad either. Keep up the good work..... I mean in the class.
